India has significantly expanded its digital education ecosystem, with more than 1.49 lakh schools now covered under Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and digital learning initiatives. The expansion is part of the government’s efforts to make education more accessible, technology-driven and aligned with the needs of a digital economy.
The initiative focuses on improving digital infrastructure in schools while increasing access to online learning resources for students and teachers across the country.
To strengthen technology-enabled learning, the government has sanctioned more than 1.76 lakh smart classrooms and 1.79 lakh ICT laboratories in schools. These facilities are expected to support interactive teaching methods, improve digital literacy and create more engaging classroom experiences.
The expansion of digital infrastructure is aimed at equipping schools with the resources needed to integrate technology into everyday learning.
Government-supported digital learning platforms have also recorded substantial growth.
The SWAYAM platform now offers over 18,580 online courses, with more than 6.1 crore enrolments and 53.7 lakh certifications issued to learners across the country.
Other digital education initiatives, including SWAYAM PRABHA, PM e-VIDYA and DIKSHA, continue to expand access to learning through online resources, television and radio. DIKSHA currently hosts more than 3.66 lakh digital learning resources in 135 languages, making educational content accessible to learners from diverse linguistic backgrounds.
In higher education, the One Nation One Subscription (ONOS) initiative has extended access to academic journals and research resources across 7,414 institutions. The programme is benefiting nearly 99 lakh students, researchers and faculty members, supporting research and innovation in universities and colleges.
The government has also expanded innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives through the Atal Innovation Mission.
More than 10,000 Atal Tinkering Labs have been established across the country, benefiting over 1.1 crore students and supporting more than 16 lakh projects in emerging technologies.
In addition, 72 Atal Incubation Centres have supported over 6,700 startups, contributing to the creation of more than 32,000 jobs and strengthening India’s startup ecosystem.
The expansion of digital education initiatives reflects the government’s broader vision of building a technology-enabled and inclusive education system. By investing in digital infrastructure, online learning platforms and innovation ecosystems, India aims to equip students with future-ready skills while supporting the long-term goal of Viksit Bharat 2047 through education, technology and innovation.
